GRAND RAPIDS — After a few months of searching, Fox Motors, one of West Michigan’s largest auto dealership groups, has found a location in Chicago to house its first out-of-state dealership.
According to a report in Crain’s Chicago Business, Fox Motors selected a 7.5-acre parcel between the Bucktown and Lincoln Park areas on Elston Ave. near a heavy retail area as the permanent home for its Ford-Lincoln dealership.
A zoning application the company filed with the city indicates that it plans a 64,000-square-foot project at the site, which would include a three-story showroom and a one-story service center, the report stated. The site would have parking for about 1,000 vehicles.
In September, Fox Motors CEO Dan DeVos told MiBiz the Chicago expansion to sell the Ford and Lincoln brands was “a big step” for the $489.4 million (revenues) dealer group as it worked with various automakers in the pursuit of growth opportunities.
In January, Fox leased a vacant former dealership on Michigan Avenue to serve as temporary space while the company shopped around for a permanent site for the dealership, Crain’s reported. That temporary facility is scheduled to open this month.
The permanent dealership site should open by 2015, according to an official at Fox Motors.
Fox Motors operates 21 dealerships selling 41 brands in West Michigan, the northern Lower Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula. It opened a new Fiat store in Traverse City last year.
