Aug. 13, 2013: Fish Lads is latest vendor in Downtown Market; Johnson Center for Philanthropy announces new faculty chair position; Registration open for Midwest UX

Registration is now open for Midwest UX, a conference taking place at downtown Grand Rapids’ Kendall College of Art and Design on Oct. 17-19. The conference is intended to show how designers, makers and builders study everyday aspects of life in order to create the best possible user experience (UX). In nonprofit news, Grand Valley State University’s Johnson Center for Philanthropy today announced the addition of a new faculty chair position. The individual that assumes the role is expected to help communities understand their philanthropic landscape and emerging best practices. The chair was established with a $1.5 million gift from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the Kellogg Company 25-Year Employees’ Fund. [10:23 a.m.]

The newest vendor in the expanding downtown market has been announced: Fish Lads of Grand Rapids. Fish Lads is founded by Jeff Butzow, a 15-year veteran of Seattle’s Pike Place Market. Butzow, raised in Traverse City, will return to Michigan to sell a variety of freshwater fish, as well as seafood flown in daily from both the Atlantic and Pacific. The Downtown Market is scheduled to open on Aug. 26. [9:30 a.m.]
