GRAND RAPIDS — MiBiz announced today that veteran business journalist Mark Sanchez has begun working for the region’s largest business publication as a Senior Writer. Sanchez will cover the West Michigan health care, finance and small business beats for MiBiz and its affiliated print and online publications.

For the last 25 years, Sanchez has been a mainstay of the West Michigan media scene, most recently as associate editor of Business Review West Michigan. Before that, he worked at both the Grand Rapids Business Journal and The Holland Sentinel.

“Mark is the best business reporter in West Michigan when it comes to covering health care and finance,” said Joe Boomgaard, managing editor of MiBiz. “We always respected him as a competitor and are glad to have him on the MiBiz team. As we expand our beat reporting, Mark will be key to uncovering and reporting news and information our readers can use in those critical subject areas for West Michigan businesses.”

The addition of Sanchez to the MiBiz editorial team is one of several recent moves to strengthen the magazine’s regional business coverage. Former Chicago Tribune columnist and business reporter Brian Edwards joined MiBiz as editor and publisher in September 2011 as part of the team that acquired the business paper.

In December, MiBiz announced that veteran technology journalist and former Detroit Free Press business reporter Mike Brennan had joined the team as Senior Writer.

In addition, longtime readers of MiBiz will note the return of the familiar byline in the Jan. 9 edition. Rod Kackley, the publication’s former managing editor, returns to MiBiz as Senior Writer. Kackley will contribute regular stories on the manufacturing industry and agribusiness and food, among other topics. Most recently, Kackley served as news director of WOOD Radio.

MiBiz also added Elijah Brumback as a Staff Writer. A recent graduate of Grand Valley State University, Brumback wrote for the student newspaper, The Lanthorn, and Revue West Michigan before joining MiBiz. He will focus on the construction, architecture and commercial real estate industries and general assignment reporting.

Boomgaard said MiBiz continues to look for contributors in Southwest Michigan, including the Kalamazoo-Battle Creek markets.

Former Staff Writer Nathan Peck left the publication in December for a research position at a manufacturing company in Grand Rapids.

“While we were sorry to see Nate go, we thank him for his service over the past two years and wish him the best in his new endeavor,” Boomgaard said.
