Don’t believe the Mayans

Happy 2012. While the Mayans are predicting really bad things for this year, we’re actually pretty bullish on the economy and opportunities for growth over the next 357 days. Maybe it’s because we’ve been listening to local executives, economists and business owners rather than consulting a 5,125-year calendar. Whatever the reason, we’re glad to be off and running with our first edition of the New Year.

As you flip through the pages of this issue, hopefully you’ll notice some of the growth-oriented changes we’ve begun to make with MiBiz. Some involve type fonts and design; others are represented by new bylines and coverage areas. We’ve begun expanding the paper’s news content with beat reporting by some of the area’s most experienced business reporters. Our goal is to put together a top-notch team of staff reporters and contributing writers that can produce in-depth stories that will help you make money, save money or find money to help grow your business.

To that end, Mark Sanchez, former associate editor of the now defunct newspaper Business Review West Michigan, has joined the MiBiz editorial team as a senior writer. Mark will be covering health care, finance and small business for us.

We’ve also added veteran tech and business writer Mike Brennan to the team to lead our technology coverage. Mike owns and publishes MiTechNews.com and has worked as a tech reporter since 1980 in Silicon Valley, New York City, Seattle, Memphis and Detroit, where he was the lead tech writer for the Detroit Free Press.

In addition, longtime readers of MiBiz will note the return of a familiar byline in this issue. Rod Kackley, the publication’s former managing editor, will be contributing regular stories on manufacturing, agribusiness and food, among other topics. Most recently, Rod served as news director of WOOD Radio.

MiBiz also added Elijah Brumback as a staff writer. A recent graduate of Grand Valley State University, Brumback wrote for the student newspaper, The Lanthorn, and REVUE magazine before joining MiBiz. He will focus on the construction, architecture and commercial real estate industries and general assignment reporting.

With the expansion of the news hole, we’re scaling back on columnist content in the paper. We’ll continue to offer some regular columns in the paper — including Auto Focus, Sustainability Desk, Parting Shots — while others will continue on the web. While we’ve only owned the paper for about 100 days, we’d like to offer our thanks to all columnists who have contributed their wisdom and insight to these pages over the years.

These changes are the first of many in 2012. In fact, our goal is to make incremental improvements in every issue of MiBiz for the rest of time. Please feel free to contact me directly with your comments, suggestions, feedback or insults. My email and phone number are posted below.

Be good.
