GRANDVILLE – After years of rumors, it’s official: Cabela’s is coming to West Michigan.

Cabela’s Inc. announced today that it would be opening a second a store in Michigan at the former X-Rite Inc. headquarters east of the Rivertown mall at 44th and Ivanrest. The Sydney, Neb.-based mega-retailer’s first Michigan location opened in 2000 in Dundee in southeast Michigan. The company plans for the new 88,000-square-foot store to open in spring 2013. As a comparison, the store in Dundee is 225,000-square-foot.

In addition to the Grandville location, Cabela’s also plans to open two more of its next-generation design stores in Louisville, Ky. and Columbus, Ohio.

CWD Investment Real Estate, which owns the 43-acre property, said the sporting goods giant puts the 386,000-square-foot mixed-use development at about 65 percent full.

“We are thrilled to welcome Cabela’s to our community. Securing Cabela’s as our second anchor will have a significant impact on our leasing efforts for the balance of the shopping center, which has already received strong interest from retailers,” said Scott Wierda, managing partner of CWD in a press release.

The store is expected to add 200 full-time jobs and features a gun library, boat shop, bargain cave and fudge shop.

Further details concerning the first anchor have yet to be released, however Weirda said the tenant would occupy 135,000 square feet. According to county records, Target Corp. purchased part of the X-Rite facility back in September of 2011.

Cabela’s CEO Tommy Millner, said in the company’s press release it was “the loyalty of our online and catalog customers” that made the additions in the three regions happen. Millner indicated the company had been interested in building a store in the Grand Rapid area for years.

CWD’s redevelopment of the former X-Rite facility began in 2009 and will feature retail, restaurant, office and recreational space. Weirda said CWD is in the pre-lease stage with 20 other retailers, which should be solidified by late summer. The entire development should be complete by 2013 with the first phase coming online this October.

A total cost figure on the redevelopment has yet to be disclosed, but CWD bought the X-Rite space for $7.2 million in 2009.

Construction on the Cabela’s portion is slated to begin this summer. Colliers International represented Cabela’s in the deal.
