The Michigan Economic Development Corp. under Gov. Rick Snyder and CEO Mike Finney has begun to focus more on talent initiatives as part of both an internal and an external strategy to promote economic gardening in the state.

1. MichAGAIN – This program seeks to bring talent back to Michigan. With events scheduled across the country, the state is looking to farm new interest for companies.

  • June 19, Boston, Mass.
  • Oct. 22-24, Washington, D.C.
  • Nov. 13, Chicago, Ill.
  • Dec. 27, Detroit, Mich.

2. Michigan Shifting Gears – Launched in 2009 in conjunction with Ann Arbor Spark, corporate workforce veterans can get career-transitioning assistance in a 16-week program that helps reposition skills to support growing small business sectors.

3. MEDC Jobs Portal – The jobs portal provides a place for employers and those looking for work to post job offerings and resumes in fields from agriculture to manufacturing.

4. Michigan Talent Bank – The site boasts more than 38,000 jobs are posted monthly with more than 55,000 employers able to access potential hires’ resumes.

5. Michigan Works! – With more than 100 service centers across the state, the Michigan Works! agencies connect companies with skilled workers and training programs to enhance employees’ abilities.

6. National Career Readiness Certificate – Administered by the ACT organization, this certificate, WorkKeys, is meant to help companies identify workers’ core abilities and skills, which can be asked for prior to hiring. West Michigan helped pilot the statewide delivery of WorkKeys as part of a WIRED grant.

7. Fidelity Bonding Program – Companies can help protect themselves from potential high-risk, yet qualified employees, insuring the company against any property or money lost from $5,000 to $25,000 in increments of $5,000.
