GRAND RAPIDS – Mel Trotter Ministries has purchased the former River City Slims bar at 243 Commerce Avenue SW, according to Sandra Gaddy, VP of development and marketing for Mel Trotter.

Gaddy said the organization has no specific plans, other than expanding the ministry’s services. The building was purchased for $450,000.

“Having a bar or nightclub next door can be a hindrance to the work we are trying to do,” Gaddy said. “For us to be able to expand our industry in this capacity is a wonderful opportunity for us.”

Gaddy said Mel Trotter has 45 men and 25 women currently enrolled in the ministry’s S.A.V.E Discipleship Program, its substance abuse initiative. The emergency shelter houses almost 200 homeless.

Amicus Management Inc., the court appointed receiver for the property, is holding the liquor license from the bar.

Steve May, VP of Finance for Mel Trotter, said the organization is in the process of getting strategic planning for building.

“One of our goals is to develop a master plan,” May said. “We are about year away on that at least.”

May said as the ministry’s needs keep growing, he has seen demand for properties in the neighborhood go up, making it difficult for the organization to find a reasonable deal on space. The opportunity to acquire an adjacent property was invaluable and was able to happen because of a special donation to the ministry, he said.
