GRAND RAPIDS — High-end fashion retailer A.K. Rikks will soon slip into a comfortable and stylish new space on 28th Street.

The company announced its move at a press conference at the J.W. Marriott this morning.

The new store will be located at the site of the former Nextel headquarters at 6303 28th Street.

Jim Murray, general manager for A.K. Rikks, said that while the company thought of moving downtown, it wasn’t the answer to their needs. After expanding the store to carry women’s garments, bags and shoes, the company needed to look for more space.

The 28,000-square-foot building features several specialty sections including men’s suiting and custom tailoring, a women’s shoe and handbag salon, a Rikk’s gifts home and style area featuring Herman Miller products, as well as event space.

Other notable features include 400 square feet of children’s space, which can be monitored by employees via an iPad and 3000 square feet that is in development for use in conjunction with Kendall College’s fashion and merchandising program. The idea, Murray said, is to create a learning lab and classroom for the program. The company is in the process of applying for nonprofit status for that partnership.

The store will also have many high-end technical amenities, including a 12-foot by 17-foot video screen, a moving platform front window display, a coffee and beverage station, three fireplaces and a cloud point-of-sale system.

The company is working with Lamar Construction Co. for the building, which was design by architects at Visbeen Associates Inc. Murray said the store hopes to be open by mid-August.
