Corporate clients might be singing the blues when they approach attorney Mark Smith for legal counsel, but they might not know that he can be found on the radio spinning blues tracks — along with an eclectic mix of other tunes — as a volunteer programmer on WYCE.

Smith — known as "Smitty" to listeners of the independent community station — got involved with the Community Media Center 12 years ago, eventually serving as president of the organization's board of directors when the center acquired Wealthy Theatre.

"I'm passionate about the Community Media Center," he said. "It's critical for (the community) to have its voice be heard."

Throughout his involvement with the center, he's offered his legal skills whenever the board needed it, including when the group had to take on the cable companies to preserve the availability of the center's public access television station, GRTV.

While his practice at Rhoades McKee PC focuses on business and corporate law, Smith's musical tastes span many genres.

"It's fun to slip into a different role. People who have known me for years don't know about my side job as a DJ. ... It's a couple of the best hours I spend each week," he said, noting his skills as a lawyer also come in handy when interviewing guests. "I know how to ask the questions to get them to what they want to say."

But more than anything, Smith said he just loves being able to have a part helping deliver music to a community of listeners.

"I love the music," he said. "I get to reach out to people with a stew of sounds."
