GRAND RAPIDS — An upcoming event aims to give a boost to local entrepreneurs by helping them understand some new options available to help jumpstart their small businesses.

A Steelcase Inc. brand and the state branch of the Startup America Partnership, will host “The Impact of Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act” on Aug. 23 at the Steelcase Town Hall.

Turnstone, a Steelcase brand that focuses on providing furniture options for small business, and Startup Michigan have teamed to host the free, daylong event covering the impact of the new legislation on entrepreneurs.

The event features a keynote address from Scott Case, former founding CTO of Priceline.com and current CEO of Startup America Partnership, as well as a number of breakout and panel sessions.

Speakers included representatives from Kalamazoo-based TGap Ventures LLC, the Michigan Office of Financial and Insurance Regulation, Grand Valley State University, the Michigan-based equity crowdfunding platform RelayFund and several law firms.

The goal with the event is to help entrepreneurs understand what the new JOBS Act will mean for early-stage companies looking to use crowdfunding in their startup phase, said Jeremy Bakken, a director at Lambert, Edwards & Associates. The public relations and investor relations company is a partner in RelayFund with investment banking firm Hartwick Capital of Grand Rapids.

“This event is a community effort to support entrepreneurship in West Michigan,” Bakken said. “It’s meant for entrepreneurs who need help getting their ideas off the ground and let them know of resources locally and nationally they may not be aware of.”

Following the panel sessions, a Startup Michigan will lead a roundtable discussion on developing a statewide entrepreneurial community, concluding with 10 Michigan entrepreneurs who will present on their startup businesses.

The event includes breakfast and lunch with time for networking. Space is limited. Registrations is available online at www.impactofjobsact.eventbrite.com.
