Helping small businesses and startups is just what Doris Drain does.

Outside of her work at United Bank, Drain puts her 27 years of banking experience to task in helping Grand Rapids Opportunities for Women (GROW) and the Alliance for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE). As women-owned businesses are on a steady rise, Drain believes making resources and opportunity available for women – as well as men – is a great benefit to local communities.

Drain initially started her contribution to GROW by evaluating business plans and conducting mock loan interviews for existing and potential new business owners.

“For me (working with GROW and AWE) is a way of contributing the skill set I’ve developed over the last 27 years,” she said.

Drain also serves on the steering committee for the AWE, a division of GROW, and is chair of AWE’s special events committee. The organization is focused on connections, education and leadership training for the female entrepreneur looking to take her business to the next level, she said.

Drain helped launch GROW’s new microloan program that offers loans up to $10,000 for those business owners or startups who are struggling to find working capital.

“When these businesses are successful, it’s a way for them to contribute to their community,” she said. “When small businesses and startups can access these types of resources, it empowers them to go out, hire people and in turn generate more local impact.”
