NORTON SHORES — GE Aviation’s Johnson Technologies subsidiary is a prominent defense contractor in West Michigan, but it’s a rush of new commercial contracts that has necessitated an expansion of one of the company’s two Muskegon-area properties.

The manufacturer of jet engines and other aircraft systems for the U.S. military as well as commercial carriers operates three facilities in the Muskegon area, including one in the city of Muskegon and two in Norton Shores.

While Johnson Technologies recently expanded the Norton Shores facility, it is now turning its attention to the 110,000-square-foot Muskegon plant on Latimer Drive in the Port City Industrial Park. Johnson Technologies plans to invest $300,000 into a 3,000-square-foot expansion at the plant.

The move is expected to create two-dozen jobs, Michelle Messer, financial analyst at the company, told the Muskegon City Commission last month in a public hearing for the company’s tax abatement.

The expansion and the machines it will house, as well as the two dozen it will employ, will work to satisfy a commercial contract with the parent company, General Electric.

“The 3,000 feet is what is needed for the additional pieces of machinery,” Messer told the commissioners. “There’s not much empty space anymore.”
The company said it expects to add machinists and technicians to operate the new machines. It plans to work with Michigan Works! to fill the advanced manufacturing positions, Messer told the commissioners.
