Aug. 7, 2013: Grand Rapids law firm accepts applications for veterans scholarship program; Roger B. Chaffee Planetarium to undergo major renovations

Grand Rapids-based law firm Plachta, Murphy & Associates today announced the firm is accepting applications for its second annual Veterans Scholarship Program for those former service men and women in Michigan pursuing four-year degrees. Two $500 scholarships will be awarded on Aug. 31, 2013. The application deadline is July 31. Both scholarships will be decided by a panel of community veteran advocates. In addition to other qualifications for eligibility, applicants must submit a 300- to 500-word essay on why they joined the military, how it affected their life and what their plans are after graduation. For 2014, the law firm is also seeking scholarship matching partners for a three-year commitment. The program will be renamed The West Michigan Professional Coalition Veteran Scholarships Program. The Roger B. Chaffee Planetarium at the Grand Rapids Public Museum is slated to undergo major renovations this September. The Planetarium will close on Sept. 14, 2013 at 5 p.m., and is scheduled to reopen in February 2014. The GRPM plans to upgrade the technology, seating, design and display in the Planetarium with a $1.2 million investments, $800,000 of which is funded through the The Wege Foundation.
