The Michigan Strategic Fund today approved a $3 million Community Revitalization Program performanced-based loan to Mid Towne Hospitality LLC in support of the firm’s five-story, 148-room hotel project on Michigan Street in Grand Rapids. The Mid Towne project was also granted a brownfield single business tax credit for approximately $7.5 million in eligible activities. The total investment in the third phase of the Mid Towne Village project, which includes the West Michigan Women’s Health Center, Park Row Condos and the 545 Michigan Street mixed-use building, is roughly $14 million. Hello West Michigan today announced a new campaign called “Find Your Reason.” The group is a collaborative effort of several area companies as well as undergraduate students from Grand Valley State University and Calvin College. The campaign will put billboards starting on Labor Day weekend along I-94 between Chicago and Michigan to target motorists. Digital and print ads, as well as advertising at CTA stations, will follow.  Hello West Michigan seeks to tout West Michigan as a place where business thrives and people want to live and work. Four West Michigan agencies provided support for the initiative: Stevens Advertising, Highland Group, Fairly Painless Advertising and Kantor Wassink. [4:11 p.m.]

Rail operator Amtrak today announced the company is introducing AmtrakConnect, a cellular-based Wi-Fi service, on its Michigan trains starting in early 2014. Michigan is the first state in the Midwest to finalize the contract for this service, according to a release from the company. However, with growing onboard data demands, passengers are restricted from streaming video and music or downloading any file larger than 10MB. [2:50 p.m.]

The inventor of frozen garlic bread, Cole’s Quality Foods, is launching its Tasty Tailgate Tour on Friday in East Lansing and Kalamazoo. The tour is meant to showcase four new products Cole’s is launching: Chipotle BBQ Texas Toast, Spicy Buffalo Texas Toast, Hidden Valley® Ranch Texas Toast and Hidden Valley® Ranch Cheese Sticks. More than one million people are expected to be served during the tour. The five-month tour will stop at 21 NCAA and NASCAR venues throughout the Midwest and the South. [10:48 a.m.]

Former Michigan governor John Engler will lead a new advisory board for Grand Rapids-based private equity firm Blackford Capital. Engler, who served three terms as governor, is presently the CEO of the Business Roundtable, an organization of corporate CEOs. Joining him on the Michigan Prosperity Fund Advisory Board are Meijer Inc. co-CEO Mark Murray; David Porteous, an attorney and director at Huntington Bancshares, who once chaired the Michigan State University Board of Trustees; and Mary Petrovich of The Carlyle Group, a $180 billion private equity firm.
