Michigan’s tourism industry reached a record $18.7 billion in visitor spending in 2013. Most of the spending, $13.8 billion, came from leisure travelers, according to research firm D.K. Shifflet & Associates.

Travel Michigan reported the data today as it prepared to launch a summer travel campaign Monday using the Pure Michigan brand. The $6.2 million summer campaign will target regional markets in the Great Lakes with radio, television and billboards ads.

“The momentum of the Pure Michigan campaign continues to grow, driving record levels of leisure travel spending and hotel occupancy in the state last year,” said Leslie Hornung, senior vice president of marketing and public relations at the Michigan Economic Development Corp.

$2.0 million of the summer campaign budget came from 36 local partners around the state. They include Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, The Kalamazoo Air Zoo, Holland, South Haven, Muskegon, Michigan’s Adventure in North Muskegon, and several communities along Lake Michigan that collaborate on a promotion called “Beachtowns.”
