West Michigan will have representation on a new authority set up to oversee construction of the new international bridge between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario.

Birgit Klohs, the president and CEO of Grand Rapids-based The Right Place Inc., will participate in a six-member international Crossing Authority, which has equal representation from Michigan and Canada. The appointment was made public in a joint announcement today in Windsor.

The group was created to oversee the public-private partnership procurement process for the new bridge, as well as monitor compliance with the Crossing Agreement signed by officials in Michigan and Canada in June 2012.

Appointments to the authority will last until one year after the six-lane bridge opens, according to a statement.

“I am proud to represent our state, our region and The Right Place on this new Crossing Authority,” said Klohs, a long-time supporter of building a new international crossing.

Along with Klohs, Michigan appointed Michael D. Hayes, the president and CEO of the Midland Center for the Arts, and Matt Rizik, the chief tax officer for Rock Ventures LLC in Detroit.

“This milestone is the latest achievement in an exciting project that will create short- and long-term jobs, energize the economy and enhance security for Michigan and Canada,” Gov. Rick Snyder said in a statement.
