Ascension Health stayed in the family to select a new chief executive for Borgess Health in Kalamazoo.

Kathy Young will join Borgess Health in early 2015 as president and CEO, succeeding Paul Spaude, who retired Oct. 2 after nine years as CEO.

Young has served since 2008 as president of St. Joseph Hospital in Kokomo, Ind., which is part of Ascension’s St. Vincent Health. She has more than 20 years of experience in hospital and health system administration, including implementing lean management techniques, operations management, financial and cultural leadership, physician relationship development, program development, and leadership development and coaching.

She began her career respiratory therapist and also has a background in performance improvement.

“Kathy is a dynamic and gifted executive who will be an effective leader for Borgess and a strong addition to the Michigan ministries’ senior leadership team,” said Gwen MacKenzie, senior vice president for Ascension Health and the Michigan market leader. “Borgess is an important part of our statewide presence, and Kathy’s expertise in quality improvement and financial planning will strengthen our capabilities at both Borgess and Ascension Health Michigan as a value-based provider.”

Borgess Health includes Borgess Medical Center, Borgess-Pipp Hospital and Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital, plus an array of ancillary and affiliated services that serves patients across a 10-county market in southern Michigan.
