Grand Rapids-based 616 Development LLC unveiled its newest project this morning, which it’s calling Lofts on Monroe.
The $22 million renovation of the 156,000-square-foot former furniture factory at 820 Monroe Avenue NW will be the developer’s largest project to date, according to a statement.
Upon completion, the building will feature 85 market-rate apartments and 40,000 square feet of ground-floor retail.
The site was formerly home to Sackner Products, a furniture manufacturer. In recent years, the site housed a mix of businesses, but was not fully leased.
Construction at 820 Monroe is currently underway and the first apartments will be available for rental on the top floor of the four story building next November, according to Michael Zalewski, a spokesperson for 616 Development.
The project was designed by Grand Rapids architecture firm Integrated Architecture LLC and Grand Rapids construction company A.J. Veneklasen Inc. will serve as the general contractor.
616 also has a mixed-use project under construction at the corner of Michigan Street and Eastern Avenue, just east of the sprawling Spectrum Health campus and other medical developments. As MiBiz previously reported, the development firm is preparing to break ground on a similar project early this winter in the Creston neighborhood of Grand Rapids.
