Zeeland-based education nonprofit Pyramid P20 has partnered with Grand Rapids-based Rockford Construction Co. to develop the 181-acre former Steelcase Pyramid building campus in Gaines Township, according to a statement.

The group is purchasing the building for $7.5 million and plans to convert the 663,000-square-foot building into an education hub for pre-K through university-level education in science, technology, arts and math.

Rockford Construction will head up the renovation and new construction on the campus, as well as advise the nonprofit on property management issues.

“Rockford has a deep commitment to education-related projects. We also have a long history of repurposing high-value properties, and we bring to bear strong expertise in managing innovative collaborative spaces like GRid70 and Blue35,” Rockford Construction Chairman and President Kurt Hassberger said in a statement. “This falls right in our wheelhouse.”

The sale is expected to close in February 2015, and the group is eyeing the fall of next year for the first phase of renovations to be completed.
