The Michigan Nationals Hockey Association recently announced a major sponsorship deal with Grand Rapids-based Fox Motors.

The automotive retailer agreed to pay $45,000 over the next three years to go toward player scholarships. Southside Ice Arena will match the sum, totaling $90,000 in player scholarships, according to a statement.

Money from the fund will also be used to install a Rapid Shot Training System and provide upgrades to program’s dry land training facility.

As of April 1, all Michigan Nationals teams will all be re-named as “Fox Motors.”

“We are excited to be a part of strengthening the hockey community in West Michigan as our family truly enjoys the sport," said Daniel DeVos, owner of Fox Motors. "(Co-hockey director) Travis (Richards) was a part of our Griffins family and we are excited to continue the relationship to support our youth.”

Currently, Michigan Nationals includes 23 teams and more than 400 youth hockey players. Former NHL player and East Kentwood alum Mike Knuble is involved with the league in a coaching capacity.

“Our goal is to have the best youth hockey program,” Richards said. “We look forward to the partnership as we continue to grow and develop our program and players.”
