Michigan State University projects another steady year for growth in the state’s $18.7 billion tourism industry.

Researchers project a 1.5 percent increase in travel volume in 2015 and a 2.5 percent increase in tourism spending over 2014.

Last year, travel volumes in Michigan grew a modest 1 percent and spending increase 0.5 percent, despite the weather that was cooler and wetter than normal, according to MSU.

Playing into the industry’s favor this year is a stronger economy, lower unemployment and higher consumer confidence.

“With each year of the recovery, people have more and more confidence in the economy and are therefore more comfortable spending money on leisure travel,” said Dan McCole, assistant professor in MSU’s Department of Community Sustainability, in a statement.
