While the effort to raise the state’s sales tax to fund road repairs has fractured the Michigan business community in recent months, one regional economic development agency made a rare endorsement today by coming out in support of Proposal 1.

The Right Place Inc. and its board of directors, which includes top executives from organizations such as Amway Corp., ADAC Automotive and Grand Valley State University,  announced it “strongly supports” the measure.

“West Michigan’s roads and transportation infrastructure are a vital component to the region’s ability to safely and efficiently conduct commerce,” Birgit Klohs, president and CEO of the The Right Place, said in a statement. “Roads snarled with traffic due to closures, detours and repairs bring our region’s ability to move goods, create jobs, and grow our economy to a crawl.”

Tim Mroz, the vice president of marketing and communications at The Right Place, told MiBiz it was the first time anyone at the organization could recall putting out a statement in favor of what is essentially a political issue.

But there is hardly consensus in the business community over Proposal 1.

The Michigan Chamber of Commerce has remaining neutral on the proposal, while several local chambers including the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce support it, as does Business Leaders for Michigan and the Small Business Association of Michigan, as MiBiz has previously reported. The state chapter of the National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB) came out in opposition of Proposal 1.

If passed by voters on May 5, the proposal would result in approximately $1.3 billion to be used in repairing the state’s battered roads. The money would be raised from increasing the state’s sales tax from 6 percent to 7 percent.
