A report published by Environmental Entrepreneurs (E2) ranks Michigan fifth in the U.S. for growth in clean energy and clean transportation jobs in the first quarter.

Companies in Michigan created 616 jobs in the first quarter of 2015. The job growth was generated from three projects, one each in Midland, Huron and Sanilac counties, according to the study.

Birmingham-based manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries Xalt Energy LLC announced in March that it plans to create 300 new jobs at its production facility in Midland. In February, Chicago-based Invenergy LLC purposed the construction of a 25,000-acre wind farm in Sanilac County. the project was expected to create 100 construction jobs and 10 permanent operational positions. Colorado-based Renewable Energy Systems Americas Inc. also announced a 20,000-acre wind farm in Huron County in January. The project would result in 200 jobs at peak construction and six permanent jobs following its completion.

Michigan has ranked among the ten top states for clean energy job growth eight times since the study was initiated by E2 in 2011.

Nationally, Georgia ranked the highest in clean energy job creation for the first quarter with 2,870 jobs. California followed in the rankings with 1,885 jobs created.

Despite the focus on wind energy and vehicle technology in Michigan, the solar sector contributed to the highest number of jobs nationally for the first quarter. Solar energy companies created 6,600 jobs nationwide from 19 projects compared to the 1,400 jobs created over 11 wind energy projects, according to the study.

However, the report notes the solar industry’s performance could be tempered in the future after the current federal Investment Tax Credit sunsets at the end of 2016.
