Kent County hotels experienced 81.2 percent occupancy in the month of July, a record for the county’s tourism industry according to Experience Grand Rapids (EXGR), an agency tasked with marketing the region.

The data comes from Hendersonville, Tenn.-based Smith Travel Research (STR), a hotel industry research group.

Experience Grand Rapids said in a statement that while August data is not yet available in its entirety, weekly reports from STR indicate that the month will be 12.7 percent ahead of 2014 and occupancy will be between 80.5 percent and 81 percent.

“We are excited to see this continued momentum in tourism growth,” said Doug Small, CTA, President/CEO of Experience Grand Rapids in a statement. “There are other indicators pointing to gains in the tourism economy including increased passenger numbers at Gerald R. Ford International Airport, the record number of summer visitors to Frederik Meijer Gardens, and the excitement bestowed upon the new shopping center Tanger Outlets. Also contributing to the momentum are the continuous efforts of EXGR’s marketing and sales teams to promote the city as a leading travel destination for leisure and convention travel.”

Small went on to say that events such as Artprize beginning in the coming weeks will lead to continued momentum for the region’s tourism industry.
