Students enrolled in Kalamazoo Valley Community College’s sustainable brewing program will be eligible for a new scholarship for the winter 2016 semester thanks to Gonzo’s BiggDogg Brewing Company LLC.

The Kalamazoo-based brewery will award $500 annually to one student in the sustainable brewing program, which began this year, according to a statement.

For his part, Greg Haner, owner of Gonzo’s, hopes that the scholarship will encourage KVCC students to stay in the area and work in Southwest Michigan breweries.

“This is an exciting project for the community,” Haner said in the statement. “There’s so much to learn about how a lab works and so many parts of the process. A brew school education will make hiring much easier.”

Students in the sustainable brewing program split their time between classroom work that focuses on the science behind brewing, along with actually producing beer. Students in the program can transfer their coursework toward a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Western Michigan University’s (WMU) sustainable craft brewing program.
