GRAND HAVEN — Spectrum Health and Holland Hospital have expanded their development plans for a medical campus in Grand Haven to include a new outpatient surgical center.

Health Pointe, a joint venture between the Grand Rapids-based Spectrum Health and Holland Hospital, added the surgical center to the project as plans for the campus continue to unfold.

The project continues to go through local planning review and “is still a work in progress” in terms of all of the medical services it will house, Spectrum Health spokesperson Bruce Rossman said.

“We are in the ongoing process to develop the facility and we’re doing it to serve our patients in that area,” Rossman said. “The surgical center makes perfect sense and helps to achieve that goal.”

Planned for about 12 acres in northern Grand Haven Township adjacent to a Meijer Inc. store, Health Pointe will house primary care medical practices, urgent care, radiology and laboratory services, and specialty physician services. The campus will allow the Spectrum Health Medical Group to consolidate physician practices in the area into a single location.

The Health Pointe joint venture plans to open the three-story medical office building by 2017.

Spectrum Health in November filed a letter of intent with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services indicating it planned to seek certificate-of-need approval for a $12.1 million, 17,400-square-foot outpatient surgical center at the Health Pointe campus.

The surgical center initially would include one operating room and two procedure rooms “and will have shelled space for three additional ORs for anticipated future expansion,” according to the letter of intent.

The submission provides the first indication of how much Spectrum Health and Holland Hospital intend to invest to establish a large physical presence in the northern Ottawa County market. A cost estimate has not yet been developed for the entire 120,000-square-foot Health Pointe facility, Rossman said.

The project stems from an agreement Spectrum Health and Holland Hospital signed in 2014 to integrate clinical operations and collaborate through what’s called the Forum for Hospital Collaboration.

Health Pointe is the second new facility for Spectrum Health in a lakeshore market. The health system broke ground in mid-November on the Spectrum Health Integrated Care Campus in Muskegon.
