DETROIT — Walker-based retailer Meijer Inc. will be one of two “landmark-level” sponsors at the new Detroit Red Wings arena and Detroit Events Center, which is currently under construction.

Meijer will join southeastern Michigan health care provider Saint Joseph Mercy Health System as the two premier sponsors at the unnamed $627 million arena that’s scheduled to open in the fall of 2017, according to a statement from the arena’s developer, Detroit-based Olympia Entertainment Inc.

Both companies signed multi-year deals, according to the statement.

“We couldn’t be more excited to be a part of Detroit’s great comeback story. After opening two Meijer stores in the city recently, we see this as another excellent way to support Detroit,” Cathy Cooper, senior director of community partnerships and giving at Meijer, said in a statement. “We are so pleased to be a part of what will be a fantastic venue to watch a game or enjoy a concert.”
