Now in its second season, the Grand Rapids Drive of the NBA Development League continues to add additional offerings to the roster of semi-professional sports in West Michigan. By team President Steve Jbara’s account, the inaugural season was a success for the Drive in terms of ticket and merchandise sales and corporate sponsorships. As the organization matures, Jbara and his executive team are tasked with staying competitive in an area that has an on-again, off-again relationship with semi-professional basketball teams.

"(The outlook for a new year) can be tough to gauge. Obviously, we’re in the disposable income entertainment industry. When we look out to 2016, I don’t think the economy looks like it will explode, but there will be slow growth. That means we have to be innovative. There is a lot of competition out there — not just with other sports teams but movie theaters, plays, bowling and things like that. You have to be innovative and surprise fans and sponsors when we get their attention. That means different, fun things we can do to prove to those fans and sponsors that they’re getting ROI. We haven’t heard that people are cutting back on sports marketing, which is a choice that companies face. I think people are happy with their spend so far."
