A stable economy and a lower unemployment rate in 2016 will enable more people to afford health care, according to Tina Freese-Decker, president of the Spectrum Health Hospital Group that includes 12 facilities in West Michigan. To ensure there are enough physicians to provide that care, Freese-Decker would like to see funding in the state budget to help attract primary and specialty care providers and medical researchers to Michigan.

"I wish we had a clear crystal ball. Spectrum Health has a strong strategic plan and we are always looking to the future. We are being proactive in preparing for change. … We believe the economy in West Michigan in particular will continue to strengthen at a steady rate. Stabilization in terms of employment and income allows people to feel more confident. This is helpful in ensuring that people have access to health care for themselves and their families. … There is so much change happening in our industry. We need to continue to review that change and put plans in place to respond appropriately. … Spectrum Health has been very strategic, inclusive and well-prepared in our decision-making and actions."
