GRAND RAPIDS — A microbrewery could soon makes its way to Grand Rapids’ southeast side.
Christopher Gibbons, a local attorney with Dunn/Gibbons PLC, has filed paperwork with the city of Grand Rapids to open Brass Ring Brewing Company LLC at 2404 Eastern Ave. SE in the Alger Heights neighborhood.
Gibbons, who told MiBiz that he has been a home brewer for 10 years, sees opening a craft brewery as a “retirement career.”
The project still requires local, state and federal approvals, but given those approvals, Gibbons said he would hope to have the 3,000-square-foot microbrewery open by September 2017.
The brewery would most likely offer a small amount of outdoor seating and a light food menu would be available.
Distribution is not planned at the moment, he said.
Gibbons bought the site at 2404 Eastern Ave. — formerly The Dog King hot dog restaurant — last month for $154,500, according to Kent County public records.
Additionally, Gibbons wrote that a meeting last month with the neighborhood went well and neighbors were receptive to the proposed use.
The planned brewery would become just the latest in a rush of craft breweries to open in different parts of the city. Currently there are 17 breweries in Grand Rapids proper, according to Experience Grand Rapids, the local tourism and convention agency. There are several more breweries and neighboring communities have also seen a slew of new establishments open.
Gibbons with Brass Ring Brewing said that given the current market for small, storefront spaces in the city, the search for the right location took approximately one year and that he nearly began looking at spaces outside the city.
“We’re really excited to be on that side of town,” Gibbons said. And we’re really committed to being in the city.”
