Metro Health Hospital and two hospitals owned by Spectrum Health were ranked among the nation’s top hospitals by The Leapfrog Group, a national health care quality and safety advocate.

Spectrum Health’s Gerber Memorial Hospital in Fremont and Reed City Hospital each made The Leapfrog Group’s Top Hospital list for the second time as top rural hospitals, as did MidMichigan Medical Center in Gladwin. Metro Health was recognized for the first time as a teaching hospital.

The University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers in Ann Arbor was named a Top Hospital for the fourth time. The hospital’s parent company, the University of Michigan Health System, is working on a final agreement to acquire Metro Health.

The Washington, D.C.-based Leapfrog Group this year named 115 hospitals nationwide to its list of Top Hospitals, which is based on how well the organizations score on an annual safety survey.

“The Top Hospital award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of a hospital’s staff in providing safe and high quality of care to Michigan patients,” said Bret Jackson, president of Economic Alliance for Michigan in Ann Arbor that works with The Leapfrog Group. “I hope more hospitals participate fully in the 2017 Leapfrog Survey so we can possibly see more Top Hospitals in Michigan next year.”

This year’s list included nine children’s, 56 general, 21 rural and 29 teaching hospitals.
