GRAND RAPIDS - El Barrio Mexican Grill, a fixture of the Medical Mile dining scene for the last several years, has closed.
Located at 545 Michigan St. NE, the Mexican restaurant has been open since 2010, but officially closed on Monday night, according to a statement.
“(T)he time has come to close El Barrio Mexican Grill and prepare for a new opportunity at this space,” owners Brad Rosely and David Levitt said in the statement. “We have many people to thank for the success of the last seven years. First and most important is our loyal customer base. Without whom none of our work would have mattered. Secondly, we need to thank our staff for their hard work over the years. We are very proud of everyone that worked so hard to serve our guests.”
It was not immediately clear what will become of the space formerly occupied by El Barrio. Rosely and Levitt, partners in Grand Rapids-based Third Coast Development LLC, have numerous other construction projects ongoing or planned for the Medical Mile corridor.
The restaurant was managed by Grand Rapids-based Restaurant Partners Inc., which also operates establishments such as Grand Coney, The Beltline Bar, and Sundance Grill and Bar.
Employees of El Barrio will have the opportunity to apply for jobs at Restaurant Partners’ other establishments, according to a statement.
