Bill Hughson has joined Grand Rapids Ophthalmology as CEO, coming from IntegraMed Fertility, the largest fertility network in North America with 28 practices where he was CEO and continues as vice chairman of the board.

Hughson previously served from 2009 to 2013 as president of the health care group for DeVry Education Group.

His appointment to Grand Rapids Ophthalmology comes a few months after the practice secured a capital investment from Chicago private equity firm Sterling Partners to expand across Michigan and eventually into neighboring states.

The Sterling Partners’ investment in Grand Rapids Ophthalmology came with the formation of a medical service organization, Great Lakes MSO, that will look to acquire complementary practices.

“One of the reasons we were so thrilled to join Great Lakes Management Services Organization ("Great Lakes MSO") was the access we'd have to great talent,” said Dr. David Barrett, an ophthalmologist at Grand Rapids Ophthalmology. “Under Bill's leadership, we'll build upon our strong market position, pursue additional growth opportunities, and partner with more outstanding doctors to deliver the best possible patient care.”

Formed in 1982, Grand Rapids Ophthalmology has nine offices in West Michigan and employs 18 optometrists and 11 ophthalmologists. The practice includes optometry, retail optical, oculoplastics, cataract surgery and retinal subspecialties.
