KALAMAZOO – The ABCs of the importance of early childhood education is a lesson many area business leaders have already learned.

An ambitious five-year strategic plan for Michigan’s $17.7 billion tourism industry aims to draw far more travelers to the state and would begin to take the “Pure Michigan” brand around the world.

GRAND RAPIDS — When the Michigan Economic Development Corp. awarded a $450,000  “economic gardening” grant to Grand Rapids-based Local First of West Michigan in January, the move raised more than a few eyebrows among local economic developers and chamber executives.

LANSING — Gov. Rick Snyder’s budget proposals for the next fiscal year that steer funding to expand Medicaid and that upgrade the state’s aging road system are sure to generate the most debate among lawmakers.

The Kalamazoo Regional Chamber of Commerce and Southwest Michigan First in January announced that they had inked an alliance agreement that leveraged the strengths of both organizations. At the heart of the agreement was a shared focus on education and supporting small businesses — and a key executive, Tim Terrentine, who will straddle both organizations.

Michigan needs to spend another $1 billion on higher education to produce graduates with the advanced skills needed for the 21st century economy, contends Business Leaders for Michigan. 

If nothing else, Gov. Rick Snyder’s focus on improving funding for Michigan’s aging roads and bridges positions the issue toward the top of the agenda in Lansing.
