Grand Rapids-based Crystal Flash announced today that the company has acquired fuel transportation firm C. Barron & Sons Inc. of Monroe, Mich. Under the deal, Crystal Flash gains more than 2,000 new customers, 28 employees and four new locations. 

Allegan-based generic drug manufacturer Perrigo Co. (NYSE: PRGO) announced this morning that it agreed to acquire Irish pharmaceutical maker Elan Corp. PLC (NYSE: ELN) in a cash-and-stock transaction valued at $8.6 billion.

Zeigler Automotive Group continues to solidify its position in the Chicago area with the acquisition of a coveted BMW dealership in the Windy City's southwest suburbs.

The Michigan Strategic Fund approved state support for three projects, including a new stadium for the Detroit Red Wings, the expansion of Jackson National Life Insurance Company's corporate headquarters and the conversion of a vacant Southwest Michigan industrial site into a resort.  

Macatawa Bank Corp. reported lower earnings for the second quarter resulting from a reversal of a deferred tax asset late last year.

Gov. Rick Snyder is scheduled to cut the ribbon on ADAC Automotive’s new 72,000-square-foot paint facility in Muskegon this morning.

Muskegon-based specialty retailer Family Farm & Home plans to open its 27th store on Aug. 9 in Sparta, the company said in a statement to MiBiz. The location, 53 Applewood Drive, was last occupied by Pamida and sat vacant for about a year.

Spartan Stores Inc. has embarked on what President and CEO Dennis Eidson calls a “transformational transaction” to merge the grocery with Minneapolis-based Nash Finch Co., the two companies announced this morning.

The Michigan economy is showing more signs of life. Comerica Bank's Michigan Economic Activity Index edged up 3 percentage points in May to 125.2. Chief Economist Robert Dye attributed the increase to strong U.S. auto sales having a positive affect on the local economy, including employment. Dye expects Michigan's improvement to continue through the rest of the year.

Stryker Corporation (NYSE: SYK) released second-quarter results after the bell today.  Net sales grew 5 percent to $2.2 billion and net earnings declined 34.5 percent to $213 million versus last year's Q2 results.

The 2013 Mackinac Policy Conference kicks off Wednesday. Some 1,300 business and political leaders from Southeast Michigan and across the state will descend on Mackinac Island for the annual Detroit Regional Chamber event, which features in-depth discussions on important issues for the Michigan's business community, ranging from the economy and education to leadership and global competitiveness.

The estimated $27 million effort to restore the rapids in the Grand River has a new supporter: the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Urban Waters Federal Partnership.
