Grand Rapids-based Pioneer Construction Co. and Grand Valley State University came away with the most honors as part of this year’s Excellence In Construction Awards presented by the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Western Michigan Chapter.

Approximately 300 people affiliated with the design, development and construction industries gathered at Keystone Community Church in Ada for networking and an awards presentation.

The $46.2 million Mary Pew Idema Library, which opened in June 2013 on GVSU’s Allendale campus, captured six awards from the judges.

Pioneer Construction, the lead contractor on the library, picked up three awards for its work on the project, as well as two others for work on the Grand Rapids Downtown Market and the expansion of Founders Brewing Co.

Contractors Erhardt Construction Co. of Ada and Wolverine Building Group Inc. of Grand Rapids also received awards for GVSU projects. Those projects were in the categories of Sustainable Building for a project valued from $1 million to $5 million (Annis Water Resources Institute in Muskegon) and Renovation/Addition project valued at more than $10 million (James H. Zumberge Hall).

ABC members also named Miller Johnson attorney Peter Kok as the 2014 ICON Award winner, which recognizes a person who has made a “notable impact over a period of years” in the local construction industry. Other honorees included Eric DeLong, deputy city manager of Grand Rapids; James Moyer, the associate vice president for facilities planning at GVSU; Scott Wierda, principal and managing partner of CWD Real Estate Investment; and Keith Winn, president of Catalyst Partners.

MiBiz Publisher Brian Edwards emceed the event.
