A project to move a microbrewery from the outskirts of Sparta to the heart of the village downtown got a shot in the arm yesterday thanks to a state grant.

Chuck Brown hopes that by moving his company a few blocks from its current location to the heart of downtown Sparta, he can tap into a movement that’s brewing in small towns across West Michigan. Brown, who acquired Cellar Brewing Co. from its founder in 2013, has started the process of renovating a recently vacated building at 133 East Division St. to be the new home to the craft brewery, distillery and winery.

General Formulations Inc. plans to invest $4.175 million at its production facility in Sparta, the company announced today.

Muskegon-based specialty retailer Family Farm & Home plans to open its 27th store on Aug. 9 in Sparta, the company said in a statement to MiBiz. The location, 53 Applewood Drive, was last occupied by Pamida and sat vacant for about a year.
