The West Michigan economy thrives on the symbiotic relationship of the region’s for-profit corporations and nonprofit organizations — and, one might argue, the public sector.

While for-profit businesses get the lion’s share of the credit for the region’s economic success, the role that local nonprofits play in the community’s health, wealth and wellbeing often goes under-reported and unrecognized.

That’s why MiBiz started a nonprofit beat two years ago. Now, we’re taking the next step with the first-ever West Michigan’s Best-Managed Nonprofit Awards this week. The awards are really intended to elevate business-savvy nonprofit organizations and nonprofit leaders in West Michigan who pay attention to best practices and whose organizations are sustainable as a result. These are not charities living from one donation to the next. Rather, they’re well-run organizations that successfully leverage donor funds to achieve their diverse missions over time.

Perhaps the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award winner Birgit Klohs described it best.

“When people think of a nonprofit, they say, ‘Oh, they’re do-gooders.’ Yes, we do good — by doing well. If we just did good and did not do well, we would not be performing,” said Klohs, the president and CEO of The Right Place Inc. “Because we have 250-plus investors who expect a return on investment just like a public company, and we report out those metrics just like a public company, we are in fact a lot more transparent than a lot of privately-owned, family-owned businesses.”

The panel of judges selected Klohs and the other organizational winners because they embody the kind of entrepreneurial mindset and effective management practices shared by the top businesses in the region.
