Technology has consistently been a focus for businesses of all types throughout the 21st century. A company’s ability to incorporate the latest technology into their business, and to use that technology to improve the service that they provide to their clients, is often one of the characteristics that distinguishes top tier companies from their competition. As technology continues to evolve, business leaders in all industries find new ways to adapt it for use in their unique operations.

The construction industry has embraced the use of technology, and there are currently numerous ways that construction organizations have incorporated it into their businesses. One of the key technological advances in construction is project management software. More than just cloud storage, project management software provides many benefits to construction projects including:

  • Better Document Retrieval and Storage: Because all information is stored in one place, users have easy access to plans, specs, jobsite photos, and more

  • Maximized Efficiency: a single project management program provides the solution to otherwise time consuming processes and stacks of paperwork

  • Increased Focus: Spending less time on paperwork means more time is focused on your project

Despite the obvious advantages of typical project management systems, we at Rockford Construction found that there were drawbacks to the “out-of-the-box” software available in the market. These systems could not be customized to each clients’ needs, the mobile device integration was not user friendly, and large downloads and frequent update installations were often required. So we developed our own project management system, IRIS (Innovative Real-Time Information Sharing).

IRIS began with the need to create best-in-class project management software for our project team because out-of-the-box software just wasn’t a fit. We wanted a tool that gave us a way to stay current on project progress and manage the data that is inherent to a construction project. Building our own software meant we could create exactly the right tool for our team. And from there, a client interface was built for access to the same real-time data.

Now, IRIS software brings real-time project information to our construction team and our clients alike. With the project data at our fingertips, Rockford is able to make decisions faster and detect any potential issues that may slow down construction. IRIS also aids in the early identification of potential cost creep, providing complete transparency throughout the entire construction duration.

The main differentiator is that IRIS is completely customizable to give our clients the exact data they want to see, offering a ‘dashboard’ type view into the project:

  • Schedules
  • Progress photos
  • Submittals
  • RFIs
  • Pay applications
  • LEED information
  • Change orders
  • Meeting minutes
  • Daily reports

IRIS is also secure and web-based, allowing access from any device, any time, any where. Often, features for robust programs on desktop devices are not accessible on field devices, but IRIS allows mobile access, meaning a team member in the field can access the project dashboard just as easily as a client can from their office. With IRIS, our project team and clients are always current and always in touch.

Because IRIS is purely web based, there is no need for software or hardware to be purchased. And because Rockford developed, built, and manages IRIS, we are continually using client feedback to improve it.

Technology will continue to be an integral part of doing business in all industries and as technology continues to evolve, businesses will need to adapt their software to keep current. In the future of construction, Rockford will continue to bring high value by adapting to both emerging practices and the needs of our clients.
