As they file past authentic wreckage from one of the most devastating marine disasters in modern history, visitors to the Titanic exhibit that showed in The Henry Ford in Dearborn and now is at the Grand Rapids Public Museum can’t help but wonder what a dish or chandelier retrieved from that watery grave in the North Atlantic would be worth.

Recent acquisitions boost Perrigo sales

Allegan-based Perrigo Co. notched another consecutive year of record sales and adjusted year based on results it reported this morning and thanks to growth in each of the company’s business segments.

Grand Rapids-based Mercantile Bank Corp. (Nasdaq: MBWM) and Firstbank Corp. (Nasdaq: FBMI) of Alma announced today that they plan to merge in a deal valued at $151.5 million.

The Grand Rapids Downtown Development Authority today approved support for a handful of building rehabilitation developments along with some major new construction. The projects are expected to leverage approximately $94 million in private investment and will add more than 100,000 square feet of retail, commercial and office space along with as many as 284 new housing units in the downtown area.

The newest vendor in the expanding downtown market has been announced: Fish Lads of Grand Rapids. Fish Lads is founded by Jeff Butzow, a 15-year veteran of Seattle’s Pike Place Market. Butzow, raised in Traverse City, will return to Michigan to sell a variety of freshwater fish, as well as seafood flown in daily from both the Atlantic and Pacific. 

BENTON HARBOR — Home appliance manufacturer Whirlpool Corp. [NYSE: WHR] announced today that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Whirlpool (China) Investment Co. Ltd., plans to become the majority shareholder in another home appliances manufacturer, Hefei Rongshida Sanyo Electric Co. Ltd. [600983: Shanghai], of Hefei, China for approximately $552 million in cash.

Dematic, a Grand Rapids-based global engineering company, has introduced a new product FlexSort™ SL2. The high-capacity sorting system can be used throughout warehouses and distribution systems to sort the highest amount of cartons at the slowest possible speed.

Recent data from the International Trade Administration (ITA) shows that Michigan has set a record in merchandise exports. In the first half of 2013, exports from the state grew by three percent. This represents $29.1 billion. In the same time period of 2012, the state did $28.4 billion in exports.

On Sept. 18 and 19, West Michigan economic development group The Right Place and the Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center (MMTC) will host the second annual “Proud To Manufacture In Michigan” at the Hagerty Conference Center in Traverse City.

GRAND RAPIDS — Two marketing and branding firms have decided its time to set aside their need to compete with the belief that together they can do more good.

Independent Bank Corp. plans to repay by this fall the money it received in 2009 under the U.S. Department of Treasury’s Troubled Asset Relief Program, or TARP; Kalamazoo Valley Community College is teaming up with Bronson Healthcare Group and Kalamazoo Community Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services to develop a $42 million downtown campus.

Spartan Stores Inc. (NYSE: SPTN) reported earnings from continuing operations fell to $4.8 million, or $0.22 per share, for the first quarter ended June 22, 2013, compared to $6.1 million, or $0.28 per share, in last fiscal year's first quarter.

Grand Rapids-based Crystal Flash announced today that the company has acquired fuel transportation firm C. Barron & Sons Inc. of Monroe, Mich. Under the deal, Crystal Flash gains more than 2,000 new customers, 28 employees and four new locations.
