GRAND RAPIDS — Traverse City-based craft beer bar and restaurant 7 Monks Taproom has unveiled plans for a Grand Rapids location along the growing Michigan Street corridor.
The bar and restaurant company will open its third 7 Monks location at 740 Michigan St. NE, executives confirmed to MiBiz during the Craft Brewers Conference last week in Philadelphia. The site is part of a recently-completed mixed-use development from 616 Lofts LLC that offers 54 apartments, ground-floor retail and underground parking.
7 Monks’ proprietors Matt Cozzens and Jim Smolak plan about 5,500 square feet of space in the building that will include 25-foot ceilings and a mezzanine that overlooks the main bar. The partners hope to have the Grand Rapids location open by late fall.
The company’s second location in Boyne City should be open this summer, according to Cozzens.
“We’re not looking at mass expansion,” Cozzens told MiBiz. “Boyne City and Grand Rapids are places we enjoy being. … We feel like it’s the right time to come down there and we feel we can complement the city.”
Cozzens also pointed to a number of breweries in the Grand Rapids area that the partners know and admire, saying he looks forward to working with the brewing community in the region. The Grand Rapids location will have 57 taps, as well as offer “gastro pub food” and live music.
The flagship 7 Monks Taproom in Traverse City has twice been named one of America’s 100 Best Beer Bars by Draft Magazine.
“We are excited to have 7 Monks join us at our 616 Lofts on Michigan location,” Monica Steimle, director of community relations for 616 Lofts, said in a statement. “We feel that the Michigan Street Corridor provides a great connection from the Midtown neighborhood to downtown conveniently connecting residents to business. We appreciate their interest in Grand Rapids and their commitment to being engaged and committed to our community.”
