GRAND RAPIDS — In naming its Excellence In Construction Awards winners yesterday, the West Michigan chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors Inc. (ABC) offered a glimpse at some finished products within the region’s expanding construction industry.

The winners came from a wide variety of West Michigan’s construction industry, with a mix of awards going to general contractors and trade subcontractors. Approximately 400 construction industry stakeholders gathered for the event that honored builders in 79 different categories of work.

Aside from honoring individual projects, the awards also honor specific companies and individuals for their commitment to safety.

Holland-based Elzinga & Volkers Inc. won the Safety Award of Excellence General Contractor/Construction Manager while Grand Rapids-based Feyen-Zylstra LLC won the Safety Award of Excellence Trade Contractor honor.

ABC West Michigan also annually honors a Craft Professional of the Year (CPOY), awarded to one industry professional who “sets a high standard for professionals in their craft by exhibiting outstanding skills and leadership.”

This year’s award went to Terry Buschert, a foreman and safety advisor Portland, Mich.-based Architectural Metals Inc. as well as an apprentice adviser with the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER).

“Each year, we are astounded at the talent encompassed in the West Michigan region,” said Norm Brady, president and CEO of ABC West Michigan in a statement in a statement. “Honoring these individuals and companies who have worked tirelessly to perform excellent work in our communities is always rewarding and we congratulate and thank all of the participants for their dedication.”
