City of Allegan and Perrigo to remedy eroding bluff

ALLEGAN – The city of Allegan — about 40 miles southwest of Grand Rapids — has received a federal Hazard Mitigation Assistance (HMA) grant for nearly $4 million, according to a statement.

The grant will help slow erosion on a bluff located on the banks of the Kalamazoo River, which runs through the town, and could pose “future concerns” for the North American headquarters of generic drug manufacturer Perrigo Company PLC, also on the bluff.

Staff members from the city of Allegan as well as engineers from Perrigo will work together to exercise the grant dollars — the second largest award for hazard assistance ever granted in Michigan — 4and remedy the eroding bluff, according to the statement.

Grand Rapids-based environmental remediation firm ASTI Environmental Inc. represented the city of Allegan in securing the grant.
