HOLLAND — Grand Angels has named Tim Parker, a former R&D executive at Bissell Inc., as its new president.

Parker, who most recently ran his own exporting and consulting firm, succeeded Jody Vanderwel as president of the Holland-based angel investment network. He began work two weeks ago after six years of operating T.S. Parker Global, which exports American-branded packaged foods from Michigan to Asian markets and consults with startup companies.

Parker previously worked for 17 years at the Walker-based Bissell, including eight years as vice president of research and development.

“West Michigan is a leader. I saw this during my corporate experience and when I was out on my own. The things we make here are playing in a global market,” Parker said. “I am excited to bring my international perspective to the Grand Angels as well as my background in engineering and advanced product development to its portfolio and help drive growth.”

Parker handles day-to-day operations for the 45-member Grand Angels, which is one of 10 angel investment networks in Michigan that in 2015 put more than $16 million into startup companies across the state. Grand Angels in 2016 has invested $3.5 million in 11 deals, raising its total capital deployment to $23.1 million since forming in 2003.

Grand Angels presently holds investments in 23 portfolio companies and focuses investments in the life sciences, advanced manufacturing, information technology and software, and advanced agriculture and food science.

The firm in 2015 also formed a $7 million venture capital fund, Grand Angels Venture Fund II, to make follow-on investments in portfolio companies and new investments.

“Tim Parker has demonstrated strong results and ability to drive global change across numerous organizations, and his background aligns with Grand Angels’ investment strategy,” said Vanderwel, who remains a director on the board at Grand Angels and sits on the investment committee of the Grand Angels Venture Fund.

“As investors, we bring with us valuable experiences that help guide the entrepreneurs with whom we work and Tim’s experience building new products and introducing them to global markets will be an invaluable asset to our portfolio,” Vanderwel said.
