GRAND RAPIDS — Longtime East Hills neighborhood restaurant Jamaican Dave’s plans to relocate from Wealthy Street to a strip mall at 530 South Division Ave.

The Caribbean-focused eatery, in business for 15 years at 1059 Wealthy St., believes that the new location will offer increased visibility, according to a statement.

“I’m excited about moving to the new location because of an increase of exposure and traffic, which is what the current location was lacking,” Dudley Swaby, owner of Jamaican Dave’s, said in a statement.

The new Jamaican Dave’s location will provide the restaurant with 1,980 square feet and is expected to be open in April.

The restaurant’s move comes as developer Green Cane Properties LLC plans a new mixed-use project at the Wealthy Street location, as MiBiz previously reported. The project includes apartments, townhouses, office space and ground-floor retail.

The firm hopes to begin construction in May, according to a message from Green Cane Principal Jerry Marogil. He noted that had Jamaican Dave’s remained at the Wealthy Street site, the restaurant would most likely have had to close down for about a year during construction.
