Maru Sushi to open new restaurant concept in Grand Rapids’ west side neighborhood

GRAND RAPIDS — The operators of Maru Hospitality Group LLC, a popular sushi restaurant with four locations around the state including in the Cherry Hills neighborhood of Grand Rapids, plan to open a new eatery in the city’s west side neighborhood.

Maru’s Ando Asian Kitchen will round out the retail tenants in Rockford Construction Co. Inc.’s mixed-use development at the corner of Bridge Street and Turner Avenue, according to a statement.

The Asian restaurant — which will feature a different restaurant concept than Maru — will join Michigan-focused clothing store The Mitten State as a ground-floor tenant in the under-development building, which will also feature 36 apartments.

The building is adjacent to the New Holland Brewing Co.’s Knickerbocker Pub, the Holland-based craft brewer’s satellite brewery and distillery project, which is also being developed by Rockford Construction.

“I picked the location on Bridge Street because I believe in the growth of the West Side and want to play a part in investing in our neighborhoods,” Maru owner Robert Song said in a statement.

The Ando Asian Kitchen restaurant, expected to open on Sept. 1, will feature a full bar and seating for 120 customers.

Maru Sushi also has plans for its first Kalamazoo location at 427 Michigan Ave. in the city’s downtown district.

The restaurant will be based in the Depot project being redeveloped by Kalamazoo-based PlazaCorp Realty Advisors Inc., according to state filings.
