Meijer moving into Minnesota market

Walker-based Meijer Inc. appears to be continuing its northwest expansion.

The Minneapolis/St.Paul Business Journal reported last week that the big box retailer has acquired about 30 acres of land in Brooklyn Park, a suburb of Minneapolis.

Meijer bought the land through a subsidiary that shares the same address as Meijer’s corporate headquarters, according to the report.

Meijer spokespeople did not immediately respond to MiBiz’s request for comment over the weekend, but did confirm the news in a report on MLive in which they acknowledged the purchase of land but offered no timeline for development of the potential store, or for other plans in the region.

The news of Meijer’s expansion into the Twin Cities market comes on the heels of an announcement earlier in March that the superstore chain would invest $400 million over this year with the opening of nine new stores and 32 store renovations.

Meijer plans to open two new locations in Michigan this year, as well as some stores in Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin, according to the statement.

“We will continue our process of slow, steady growth,” Meijer CEO Hank Meijer said in a statement. “This plan has allowed us to remain focused on our customers and team members, while growing our business and ensuring we continue to innovate in the marketplace.”
