Moosejaw opening pop-up store near downtown Grand Rapids
Michigan-based outdoors retailer Moosejaw plans to open a pop-up store at the Klingman Lofts building south of downtown Grand Rapids.

GRAND RAPIDS — Retail options continue to grow in the downtown Grand Rapids area.

Moosejaw, a Madison Heights-based outdoor apparel retailer, will open a temporary 5,000-square-foot retail store later this month across the street from the Grand Rapids Downtown Market, MiBiz has learned.

According to Chris Muller, founder and president of commercial brokerage M Retail LLC, the retailer — with seven stores around Michigan as well as locations in Chicago, Boulder, Colo. and Kansas City, Mo. — will operate out of space at the mixed-used Klingman Lofts building at 400 Ionia Ave. SW.

A Moosejaw sign was placed outside the Klingman Lofts building today.

Upon opening, the Moosejaw store will remain open through the holiday season and then determine whether it will maintain the location on permanent basis, Muller said.

Moosejaw will pay an unspecified market-rate rent at Klingman Lofts and will fund upgrades to the space, including installing its own fixtures and furnishings, Muller said.

The retailer operated a similar store in downtown Detroit last holiday season, according to a report in Crain’s Detroit Business. The Detroit location currently remains open, according to Moosejaw’s website.

Attempts to reach Moosejaw were not successful as this report was published.

Ann Arbor-based LC Companies Inc. recently redeveloped Klingman Lofts into a mixed-use facility with residential and ground-floor retail.

Muller told MiBiz he’s been working to bring Moosejaw to Grand Rapids for years. He added that the retailer is confident the downtown location will be successful.

“All of the buzz (about Grand Rapids) has made them comfortable,” Muller said. “This could be permanent, but for now it’s temporary.”
