Mercy Health Saint Mary’s in Grand Rapids, Holland Hospital and Spectrum Health Zeeland Community Hospital rank among the top hospitals in the U.S. for 2017.
The three are among 10 in Michigan included in the annual list of 100 Top Hospitals compiled by Ann Arbor-based Truven Health Analytics.
Mercy Health Saint Mary’s made the 100 Top Hospitals list for the second time and Zeeland Community for the third. Saint Mary’s is one of 25 teaching hospitals recognized by Truven and Zeeland was among 20 small community hospitals.
Holland Hospital earned the recognition for the 12th straight time in the category for medium-sized community hospitals.
Using Medicare data, Truven Health Analytics evaluates hospitals across the nation in 11 areas for clinical and operational performance. In this year’s ranking, Truven analyzed data from 2011 to 2016 and found significant improvements in key quality measures such as inpatient mortality and complication rates, lengths of stay, and 30-day readmissions.
The five-year period analyzed coincides with a transition in the compensation for hospitals to a value-based model and a move away from a fee-for-service model, which “appears to be bearing some positive results for both patients and payers,” Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president at Truven Health Analytics, said in a statement.
Improvements include 52 percent of hospitals reducing their 30-day readmission rates with virtually all of the rest staying flat. Inpatient expenses held flat at 79 percent of hospitals, improved at 2 percent, and worsened at 19 percent.
The average length of stay shortened at 18 percent of hospitals, held steady at 76 percent and worsened at 19 percent, according to Truven’s analysis.
Other Michigan hospitals on the 2017 100 Top Hospitals list are:
• Oaklawn Hospital, Marshall
• Spectrum Health United Hospital, Greenville (small community hospitals)
• St. Joseph Mercy Livingston Hospital, Howell (small community hospitals)
• Beaumont Hospital-Royal Oak, Royal Oak (major teaching hospitals)
• Beaumont Hospital-Grosse Pointe, Grosse Pointe (teaching hospitals)
• Providence Park Hospital, Southfield (major teaching hospitals)
• St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Ann Arbor (major teaching hospitals)
If every hospital in the hospital performed at the level of the top 100 for Medicare inpatients, it would result in 89,000 additional lives saved, more than 61,000 fewer complications, cost savings of more than $5.6 billion, a half-day reduction in the average patient stay, and more than 300,000 fewer 30-day readmissions, according to Truven.
