GRAND RAPIDS — Two hotels are planned for vacant parcels of land in close proximity to the under-construction Switch Ltd. data center in Gaines Township.
Grand Rapids-based Grand Hospitality Management Inc. plans to build a Marriott and a Holiday Inn Express on Town Center Drive off Broadmoor Avenue, about 1.5 miles from the Switch data center site, according to a statement from commercial brokerage NAI Wisinski of West Michigan.
Construction of the two hotels is expected to begin in 2017.
“We are seeing a high demand for hotels because of the new Switch...Data Center located at the former Steelcase Pyramid,” Todd Leinberger — realtor associate at NAI Wisinski and one of the brokers involved in the purchase of the land — said in a statement.
DAR Development’s Dave Denton represented Grand Hospitality Management with both land acquisitions.
Executives and spokespeople have repeatedly said that the data center site is expected to bring 1,000 jobs to the area. But according to numbers provided by Las Vegas-based Switch in its application for Renaissance Zone status, the data center is expected to employ around 200 people people in the first five years, as MiBiz has previously reported.
